Apply to take part in the Conducting Workshop either as a Participant or as an Observer!

 

For Participants

  • Receive direct coaching from two Master Conductors
  • Gain valuable insights through conducting a professional orchestra
  • Connect with like-minded musicians who share your passion
  • Spend a week in the vibrant city of Hong Kong

 

Workshop Details:

  • The Workshop is open to a maximum of 7 Participants (aged 40 or under).
  • Each participant will receive approximately 100 minutes of podium time. The sessions will be filmed, and the videos will be studied in the video review sessions.
  • 3 Participants selected by the Master Conductors will have the opportunity to conduct in the Workshop Showcase on the last day of the Workshop.
  • After the end of the Workshop, Participants will receive an electronic copy of the videos of their own podium time.


For Observers

  • Sit in the audience during the Orchestra Sessions and the dress rehearsals of the Showcase (15-20 March).
  • Two types of passes (Session Pass and Full Pass) are available.

  • Beethoven: Symphony No 2 in D, Op 36 [Bärenreiter]
  • Brahms: Symphony No 1 in C minor, Op 68 [Breitkopf & Härtel]
  • Stravinsky: The Soldier’s Tale: “Royal March” [Chester]
  • Weber: Der Freischütz Overture [Breitkopf & Härtel]

Participants are required to bring their own scores.

10:00-13:00: Briefing session
14:00-17:00 Class with Yip Wing-sie
Evening: Dinner with Master Conductors

15 March 2021 (Monday):
10:00-12:30: Orchestra Session with Yip Wing-sie (Beethoven)
14:00-15:00: Video review session
15:15-18:15: Class with Chien Wen-pin

16 March 2021 (Tuesday):
11:00-14:00: Class with Chien Wen-pin
16:00-18:30: Orchestra Session with Chien Wen-pin (Weber)
19:00-20:00 Video review session

17 March 2021 (Wednesday):
10:00-12:30: Orchestra Session with Yip Wing-sie (Beethoven)
14:00-15:00: Video review session
15:15-18:15: Class with Yip Wing-sie & Chien Wen-pin

18 March 2021 (Thursday):
10:00-12:30: Orchestra Session with Chien Wen-pin (Brahms)
14:00-16:30: Orchestra Session with Yip Wing-sie (Stravinsky)
17:00-19:15: Video review session

19 March 2021 (Friday):
10:00-12:30: Orchestra Session with Chien Wen-pin (Brahms)
14:00-17:00: Master Conductors’ dress rehearsal of Workshop Showcase

20 March 2021 (Saturday):
15:30-18:00: Selected Participants’ dress rehearsal of Workshop Showcase
19:30: Workshop Showcase (free admission by registration; details to be announced in February 2021)


The Orchestra Sessions, Dress Rehearsals and Workshop Showcase will take place at The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts.

 


Participant Application

 
Eligibility
The workshop is open to conductors of any nationality, born on or after 21 March 1980.
 

Application schedule
1 November 2020 (Sunday): Deadline for Participant applications
Late November 2020: Applicants to hear about their application outcome
11 December 2020 (Friday): Result announcement on website
 

Application materials
Please submit a completed application form on or before 1 November 2020 (Sunday) Hong Kong time (GMT+8), with the following materials:

  1. a recent video of you conducting an orchestra or ensemble (piano reduction not preferred). The video should be within 15 minutes and include no more than 2 works;
  2. a video to introduce yourself (within 1 minute); and
  3. a recent photo (preferably taken within the last 3 months).

You are encouraged to submit the video materials via a download link without expiration date (e.g. YouTube, Dropbox, Vimeo etc.). You may also submit the materials by posting us a DVD, USB drive or memory card.
 

Fee and Payment
International Participants: HK$18,000
Hong Kong Participants (holder of Hong Kong Permanent Identity Card): HK$15,000

International Participants will receive a 50% travel subsidy of the cost of their return flight tickets.

The participation fee covers all classes and sessions listed in the schedule. Participants will be responsible for their own accommodation, travel arrangements and any other expenses during their stay in Hong Kong.

Please settle your payment via Paypal within 3 days of receiving the notice of acceptance in order to secure your place in the Workshop. The payment is non-refundable.

Visa Arrangements
According to the Hong Kong Immigration laws, non-Hong Kong permanent residents will need a work visa to participate in the Workshop. The Organiser will obtain work visas for all international Participants.

 


Observer Application


Eligibility
The Workshop is open to Observers of any nationality over the age of 6. Children between the age of 6 – 12 must be accompanied by an adult. Please submit an individual form for each attending adult, and mention in the form the names and age of any children you will be bringing.

Application schedule
10 March 2021: Deadline for Observer applications
You will be notified via email whether your application has been successful starting from mid-December.

Fee and Payment
Session Pass: HK$100 per Orchestra Session (for any single 2.5-hour Orchestra Session during the period of 15-19 March 2021) 
Full Pass: HK$500 (for all Orchestra Sessions between 15-19 March 2021, and the two Dress Rehearsals on 19-20 March 2021)

Observers will be responsible for their own accommodation, travel arrangements and any other expenses for attending the Workshop.

Notes

•    Submitted application materials will not be returned.
•    The Workshop will be documented for archival and promotional purposes. Photographs, audio and visual recordings may be printed in publications or broadcast on TV, radio, or the internet.
•    By joining the workshop either as a Participant or Observer, you agree to waive any rights to all visual, audio and application materials obtained during and for the Workshop. 
•    Participants and Observers are not allowed to take audio or visual recordings during the entirety of the Workshop. 


The Organiser reserves the right to make changes to the details of the Workshop, including but not limited to the instructors, repertoire and schedule.

In case of any dispute, the Organiser reserves the right of the final decision.
