Hong Kong International Conducting Workshop 2020

Dates: 12-17 January 2020
Orchestra: Hong Kong Sinfonietta

Calling all conductors who want to learn more!


For Workshop Participants:

  • Receive instructions and valuable insights from three master conductors  
  • Conduct a professional symphony orchestra
  • The workshop will be open to a maximum of 8 Participants (age 40 or under):
  • Each Participant will receive approximately 100 minutes of podium time complemented by a video review
  • Each Participant will receive a video of their participation
  • 3 Participants selected by the master conductors will have an opportunity to conduct in a Showcase at the end of the workshop

For Observers:

  • Part of the workshop (14 – 17 January) will be open to Observers

  • 10:00-13:00: Pre-podium Class with Yip Wing-sie
  • 15:00: Attend Hong Kong Sinfonietta concert: Good Music for Kids at Hong Kong City Hall Concert Hall

 

13 January 2020 (Monday)

  • 10:00-13:00: Pre-podium Class with Jorma Panula
  • 14:00-17:00: Pre-podium Class with Christoph Poppen

 

Days 3 – 5: Sessions with Orchestra (open to Observers)

Day 6: Workshop Showcase (free admission to public*)

Venue: Hong Kong Jockey Club Amphitheatre, Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts

17 January 2020 (Friday)

  • 15:30-18:00: Dress rehearsal
  • 19:30: Workshop Showcase

Participant Application

Participants are required to bring their own scores and attend all of the workshop sessions above.

 

Eligibility

The workshop is open to conductors of any nationality, born on or after 18 January 1979

 

Application materials

Please submit a completed application form on or before 1 September 2019 (Hong Kong time) with the following:

  1. a recent video of you conducting an orchestra or ensemble (piano reduction not preferred). The video should include not more than 2 works of up to 15 minutes in total;
  2. video to introduce yourself (within 1 minute); and
  3. a recent photo (preferably taken in the last 3 months).

You may submit the video materials via DVD, USB drive, memory card or via a download link without expiration date (e.g. YouTube, Dropbox or Vimeo etc.).

Fee and Payment

International Participants: HK$18,000

Hong Kong Participants (holder of Hong Kong Permanent Identity Card): HK$15,000

 

Participation fee covers all classes and sessions. Participants will be responsible for their own accommodation, travel arrangements and other expenses for the participation in the workshop. International Participants will receive a 50% travel subsidy of the flight ticket cost.

 

Please settle the payment within 14 days of receiving notice of acceptance in order to secure your place in the workshop. Please make payment via Paypal. Payment is non-refundable.

 

Visa Arrangements

According to Hong Kong Immigration law, non-Hong Kong permanent residents will need a work visa to participate in the workshop. The Organizer will obtain work visas for Participants.


Observer Application

 

Eligibility

The workshop is open to Observers of any nationality over the age of 6. Children between the age of 6 – 12 must be accompanied by an adult.  

 

Fee and Payment

  • Day pass: HK$200 per day (for orchestral and video review sessions on 14, 15 or 16 January 2020)
  • Full pass: HK$500 in total (for all orchestral and video review sessions and dress rehearsal of Workshop Showcase from 14 to 17 January 2020)

 

Observers will be responsible for their own accommodation, travel arrangements and other expenses for attending the workshop.

 

Please settle payment within 7 days of receiving notice of acceptance. Please make payment via Paypal. Payment is non-refundable.

As space is limited, the Organizer reserves the right to accept or reject any application. An email acknowledgement will be sent for all accepted applications.


Notes

  • Submitted application materials (including the recordings) will not be returned
  • The workshop will be documented for archival and promotional purposes. Photographs, audio and visual recordings may be printed in publications or broadcast on TV, radio, or the internet. By joining the workshop, you agree to waive any rights relating to the participation in the workshop, including all visual, audio and application materials.
  • The Organizer reserves the right to make changes to the details of the workshop.
  • In case of any dispute, the Organizer reserves the right of the final decision.
