Mauro MARIANI
Candidate of the 2027 Competition
Italian conductor Mauro Mariani is the winner of the 1st Prize at the IV Almeria Competition, the 2nd Prize and Orchestra Prize (Sofia Philharmonic Orchestra) at the Sofia Competition, a semifinalist of the Mahler Competition (Bamberg Symphony) and a three-time Conducting Fellow of the Aspen Music Festival (Colorado), where he was awarded the James Conlon Conducting Prize.
Mauro Mariani studied with Professor Nicolás Pasquet at the Hochschule für Musik FRANZ LISZT (Weimar, Germany). His artistic development was further enriched through masterclasses with musicians including Sofia Gubaidulina, Riccardo Muti, Renée Fleming, Neeme Järvi, Ton Koopman, Heinrich Schiff, Jane Glover.
Selected from hundreds of candidates, Mariani was selected by Paavo Järvi for his Conductor’s Academy (Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich), by Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla, Jaap van Zweden, and Johannes Schlaefli for the Conducting Academy of the Gstaad Menuhin Festival, by Daniele Gatti for the Accademia Chigiana (Siena), by Jorma Panula for the Panula Academy (Finland), and as a Conducting Fellow both by Peter Eötvös for the European Creative Academy and by Cristian Măcelaru for the Cabrillo Festival (California).
As Music Director of the Orchestre Universitaire de Strasbourg he conducted the French premiere of Dora Pejačević’s Symphony. His recent engagements include debuts with the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra, the Junge Kammerphilharmonie Berlin in the Berliner Philharmonie, the Niederrheinische Sinfoniker (Verdi’s La traviata at Theater Krefeld-Mönchengladbach), the Niederbayerische Philharmonie (Johann Strauss’ Eine Nacht in Venedig at the Landestheater Niederbayern). He also won the audition for the position as Assistant Conductor with the Orchestre Philharmonique Royale de Liège and was awarded a scholarship by the Bayreuth Festival.
As student, assistant, and guest conductor, Mariani has worked with institutions including the Staatskapelle Weimar, Teatro Massimo Bellini di Catania, Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, Ensemble Modern, Orchestra Sinfonica di Bari and is fluent in Italian, German, English, Spanish, French.
