Pedro SOTELO
Candidate of the 2027 Competition
Pedro Sotelo is a Spanish conductor whose work spans both the symphonic and operatic worlds. Raised in Berlin in a German, French and Spanish cultural environment, he completed his conducting studies at the Hochschule für Musik Franz Liszt Weimar with Nicolás Pasquet, Ekhart Wycik and Johannes Klumpp. During this time, he was notably awarded a scholarship by the Forum Dirigieren of the German Music Council and was selected for the 2025 Bayreuth Festival Conducting Masterclass.
He has conducted orchestras including the Orchestre National de Mulhouse, the Jena Philharmonic and the Bodensee Philharmonie, while his work in opera has ranged from his debut with Così fan tutte in Germany to conducting a new production of Carmen in Spain.
Alongside his own conducting engagements, he has worked extensively as assistant conductor on productions in Germany including Tristan und Isolde, Wozzeck and Joachim Raff’s Samson, as well as on a concert performance of Parsifal with the Spanish National Orchestra. In 2025, he was invited to the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona as assistant conductor for Lohengrin under Josep Pons and returned to the theatre in the 2025/26 season for the new production of Tristan und Isolde conducted by Susanna Mälkki.
Upcoming engagements include his debut with the Deutsche Radio Philharmonie in October 2026.
