Behind the competition

What makes a good conductor?

There is a popular statement which goes “There are no bad orchestras, just bad conductors.”

If this is true, then the question remains: what makes a good conductor?  A common theory is that good conductors act as “conduits” between the music (composers) and the recipients (musicians + audience), and in the process, they have to be able to effectively share the music with everyone. So…one of the criteria of a good conductor must be that he/she is a good communicator, or even a negotiator? What makes one better than the other? Since no two conductors communicate in the same way, the fascination is how this process, which involves a complicated process of communicating just the right potion of a concoction of “inspiration” and “knowledge”, makes or breaks the music.  It is little wonder why conductors are often referred to as “Maestros”!

Through this competition, we take a first glimpse into what makes a future Maestro. We hope you enjoy the discovery process.

Co-chair, Jury, Hong Kong International Conducting Competition

Music Director, Hong Kong Sinfonietta

I am very pleased and excited that we are hosting the 1st Hong Kong International Conducting Competition. Although it has been 32 years since I was at my first competition (Besançon International Conducting Competition), I can still remember each scene vividly. I met a lot of great musicians and conductors of my age and it changed my life. It opened doors for me and started me on my career. I am happy now that there is a competition here in my hometown, which means that young conductors in Hong Kong won’t have to make their ways to Europe or the USA for competitions!

I welcome everyone to Hong Kong and wish every conductor their dream come true! See you soon!
